Errata — Chapter Approved: Codex: Orks Q&A (v1.0): If the character carrying an attack squig (or other Squig/Grot wargear with its own model and profile) dies, the squig is removed too, to avoid the weirdness of it surviving alone. While alive, it counts as part of the character's unit for working out whether that unit has taken 25% casualties from shooting and for close combat casualties; if it's removed alongside its character, it counts as a casualty as well. It slows down any unit it's attached to — a bike or jump-pack unit carrying squigs as wargear can only move/assault at the speed of its slowest member, since the squig itself has neither a bike nor a jump pack. An Independent Character remains an Independent Character even while accompanied by Squig or Grot wargear — it's still wargear, even if it has legs.
