An Imperial Guard army of 1,500 points or more may include Colonel-Commissar Gaunt. If you take him then he counts as one of the HQ choices for the army. He must be used exactly as described below, and may not be given any additional equipment.
Wargear: Sword of Heironymo, bolt pistol, camo-cloak, frag & krak grenades.
Special Rules
Sword of Heironymo: This sword is a priceless heirloom and replaced his characteristic chainsword when it was gifted to Gaunt for his actions in the city of Vervunhive. It is a master-crafted power sword and hits at Strength 4 (this is included in the profile above). It also counts as a trademark item.
Errata — Chapter Approved: Codex: Imperial Guard Q&A (v1.0): Gaunt carries a trademark item even though he's already Fearless and passes that on to any unit he joins — its purpose is to force a Morale check on the unit when Gaunt himself dies, since a trademark item's loss normally does exactly that.
Front-liner: Commissar Gaunt has always led from the front, and will plunge into the thick of the fighting without hesitation. If there is an assault occurring within 12" of Gaunt at the start of the Imperial Guard player's turn and he is not in combat, he must immediately move toward the nearest combat in his Movement phase and assault the enemy models in that combat if at all possible. However, when Gaunt charges into an assault, he inspires such feats of heroism in his men that all Tanith Imperial Guard models in that combat benefit from +1 Attack for that round only. This benefit includes Gaunt himself.
Camo-cloak: Gaunt's camo-cloak adds +1 to any Cover saves he is allowed (eg, a 5+ Cover save becomes a 4+ Cover save). He receives no Cover save when in the open.
Independent Character: Colonel-Commissar Gaunt is an independent character and follows all of the rules for characters in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook.
Fearless: Gaunt is totally fearless and never has to take Morale or Pinning tests. He confers this ability to any unit he joins.
Leader: In addition to his rank of Colonel-Commissar, Gaunt is a leader of men. The Advisors special rule does not apply to him – he is free to act independently. He will not carry out a Summary Execution (as any unit he joins becomes Fearless) but he will execute a Sanctioned Psyker subject to the It's For Your Own Good! special rule. Furthermore, any Imperial Guard squad within 12" of Colonel-Commissar Gaunt may use his Leadership value for all Morale and Pinning tests.
