A Chaos Space Marine army of 2,000 points or more may be led by Abaddon. If you take him then he counts as the Chaos Lord choice for the army. He must be used exactly as described below and may not be given extra equipment from the Chaos Armoury.
Wargear and Gifts: Talon of Horus (a master-crafted lightning claw with integral combi-bolter and which counts as a Personal Icon), Daemon Sword Drach'nyen, Chaos Terminator armour, Demagogue (see the Word Bearers entry), Daemonic Rune, Spiky bits.
Special Rules
Daemon Sword Drach'nyen: This arcane blade contains the bound essence of Drach'nyen, a writhing warp entity that can rend reality apart. The sword makes one attack per turn, with no re-rolls. Any hit inflicted ignores armour saves and kills the victim outright. Vehicles struck by the blade are penetrated automatically.
Errata — Chapter Approved: Codex: Chaos Space Marines Q&A (v3.0): When Drach'nyen strikes a vehicle, "always penetrated" means a penetrating hit, not a glancing one. Abaddon's sword is a Daemon weapon, but his mastery over it is such that it is not subject to the normal rules for Daemon weapons (Mastery tests, and so on).
Mark of Chaos Ascendant: Abaddon has attained the favour of each of the Chaos powers in turn, and has proved the equal of his mentor Horus in that he has resisted becoming the pawn of any individual patron. Over the millennia Abaddon has melded the Marks of Chaos granted to him, and now bears a unique Mark that combines all of the gifts granted to him. The Mark of Chaos Ascendant is counted as a Mark of Chaos Undivided for troop selection purposes. The other benefits are included in his profile. Abaddon is Fearless and therefore assumed to automatically pass all Morale checks and Pinning tests he is called upon to make.
Chaos Terminator Armour: Abaddon's Terminator armour is adorned with various archaic devices, runes and fetishes that he has attained over the millennia. The armour has the abilities of normal Terminator armour but the 'Crux Terminatus' invulnerable save is increased to 4+. The armour will also nullify any psychic power used against Abaddon, or that includes him in its area of effect, on a D6 roll of 4+. In addition, Abaddon's Terminator armour incorporates a Daemonic Rune gifted to him by the Daemon-oracle of Asellus Tertius.
Independent Character: Unless accompanied by a Retinue, Abaddon follows the Independent Character special rules in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook.
Retinue: Abaddon may be accompanied by a bodyguard of his finest warriors. See the Chosen entry in the army list for details.
